Is the height adjustment dohickey necessary for router table? Is the P/C 310 sufficient to use as router? |

What height adjustment doohickey? I'm going to be using my new 690 as a table mount router, mostly for electric stuff. I'd like an above the table height adjustment system, but it's not a necessity. As for power, a lot of folks think the 310 is pretty much the only router you'll need for an acoustic guitar. I think it probably depends on what you want to do with it; brace shaping, truss rod slotting, binding routing, that all seems very doable with a lam trim of that power. |

i believe a 310. or any trimmer, is underpowered for general table use. i think the effective minimum for table use is 1.5 hp, and then you would not be able to use large bits. my table router is a pc7518, 3 1/4 horse. the dohickey you refer to is i assume, an above the table adjusting crank or handle. they are not necessary but make life a whole lot easier. |

If you are planning on table mounting the router, I would recommend (at least) the Porter-Cable 690. Since my router table cabinet has a door on the front, I can change the height pretty quickly, just using the supplied base. I also tend to set the router up and do multiple copies of the same part at once, just to make life easier. If your router table is not open in the front (or doesn't have a door), then a top mounted height adjuster would make life MUCH sweeter! :) |
